Real Madrid beat English side Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League final at the Stade de France in Paris.

Brazilian forward Vinicius Júnior scored the only goal (59th minute).

The 21-year-old Brazilian became the youngest scorer of a Champions League final since 2009. Back then, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi scored against Manchester United at the age of 21.

The kick-off was postponed several times for security reasons. As a result, the game started 37 minutes late.

There were huge queues at the entrance to the stadium, which prevented many fans from getting to their seats in time. Also some fans without tickets tried to break into the stadium, police had to use tear gas.

“Real Madrid earned €22m for winning the final, while Liverpool earned €15.5m as a finalist. In total, Madrid earned €109.8m for participating in the Champions League, while Merseyside earned €115.8m. “Real Madrid are also guaranteed €3.5m in the Super Cup.

Madrid won the Champions League title for the first time since 2018. “Real Madrid hold the record for most wins in the most prestigious European competition – 14. The club have won the competition five times in the last ten years, as well as three times in a row, something no-one has managed since the 1992/93 Champions League season, when the format was changed and the competition was renamed the Champions League.

Real Madrid CF coach Carlo Ancelotti emerged as the sole winner of the Champions League/Europa Cup. He has won the trophy twice each with AC Milan (2003, 2007) and Real Madrid (2014, 2021). The Englishman Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) and Zinedine Zidane (2016, 2017, 2018) are in second place, having led Liverpool and Real Madrid to victory three times each respectively.

Ancelotti’s teams have met Liverpool three times in the final. In the first, Milan lost on penalties after leading 3-0. In the others, AC Milan and Real Madrid were each victorious.

Liverpool have faced Real Madrid twice before. They won 1-0 in Paris in 1981 and lost 3-1 in Kyiv in 2018. The Kyiv encounter was memorable for the gross mistakes made by German Merseyside goalkeeper Loris Karius. It was 1981, the last time Madrid lost a major tournament match. Since then, the Royals have won eight finals.
