“Manchester United have told Barcelona that they will not spend the majority of their transfer budget to sign Frankie de Jong. Despite Erik ten Hag wanting to reunite with the former Ajax midfielder .In doing so, the Catalans want £65m back that was spent on the move, the Daily Mail claims.

A compromise is still a long way off. “United have made it clear to the Catalans and De Jong’s representatives that they cannot allocate that much of their transfer funds to the Dutch star. Ten Hague will be forced to work on a tight budget when he officially starts next week, as MJ failed to qualify for the Champions League.

He will have a major job to do to rebuild the squad, which could see up to 10 players leave, but the club are determined to remain disciplined in the transfer market. De Jong, 25, would prefer to stay at Nou Camp or move to a Champions League club if Barcelona decide to sell him.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has admitted he may have no choice but to sell some stars because of the club’s ongoing financial problems.

I don’t know if we will sell important players. If we make a few deals, it may not be necessary. The priority is our financial situation. We will do what is best for the club.

Ten Hague sees acquiring a central midfielder as a priority, as well as a striker to replace Edinson Cavani. The target is Darwin Nunez from Benfica. The new manager could also strengthen the central defence, with Jurjen Timber or Lissandro Martinez from Ajax the main targets.
